Meet Tom - Apprentice Estate Surveyor 

Tom joined South West Water two years ago as an apprentice, following studying for his A-levels.  

As an Apprentice Estates Surveyor, Tom is involved in advising different areas of the business on land-related matters, particularly where projects affect private land. His work involves collaborating closely with operational teams and external stakeholders, such as landowners and tenants.  

As part of his apprenticeship, Tom is studying for a degree through Harper Adams University and was nominated as a finalist for the university’s Apprentice of the Year Award.  

What attracted you to the apprenticeship with South West Water?

“I wanted to continue learning after my A-levels, but I also wanted to do something more practical and gain hands-on experience while studying. 

What really attracted me to the role was the variety. Every day is different. Part of my time is spent in the office, while the other part is spent out on site visiting locations, meeting people and speaking with different stakeholders. There's always something new happening, which keeps the role interesting and enjoyable.” 

Have you always wanted to become an Estates Surveyor? 

“I knew I wanted to work in a land-based role and do something that involved being outdoors, but I wasn't entirely sure what that would look like. 

I spoke to a few people who were already working as surveyors and learned more about their careers. The more I heard, the more interested I became.  

I initially applied to university full-time, but when I discovered the apprenticeship route, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. 

Like many people, I didn't fully appreciate the variety of careers available within South West Water. Most people tend to think about the operational side of the business because that's what's visible to the public. What surprised me was discovering the range of specialist and professional roles that support the business behind the scenes.” 

What would people be surprised to learn about your role? 

“People probably don't realise how much planning happens behind the scenes before work starts on a project. 

Whether it's a large investment programme or a reactive repair, there is often a significant amount of preparation involved. We work to make sure landowners and tenants are informed, access agreements are in place and any potential challenges are resolved before work begins. There's a huge amount going on behind the scenes that many people never get to see.” 

How has South West Water supported you during your apprenticeship? 

“The support has been fantastic. Whenever I've needed help, there has always been someone available to explain things and help me develop my understanding. 

I've also been encouraged to attend industry learning events and professional development opportunities that are relevant to my role. When it comes to university assignments and deadlines, the business is very supportive and helps me balance my workload. During my university study weeks, I'm able to focus fully on my academic work, which makes a real difference.” 

What do you enjoy most about your role? 

“The variety is definitely my favourite part. 

I like the fact that no two days are the same and there's always something different to get involved with.  

I also enjoy working on projects that make a positive difference to local communities and the environment. It's rewarding to know that the work we're doing contributes to important improvements across the region.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship or a career with South West Water? 

“I'd definitely encourage them to go for it. 

South West Water is a large organisation with lots of different career paths available. Even if your interests change over time, there are opportunities to explore different areas of the business and gain experience across a range of teams. 

People are approachable, supportive and willing to help you develop. It's a great place to learn, grow and build your career.”
