Meet Maddie and Mark - Engineering Project Managers
Meet Maddie and Mark, two Project Managers within our Engineering team here at South West Water, Part of Pennon Group.
With open positions for Engineering Project Managers in Capital Delivery, Maddie and Mark have shared some thoughts on their roles.
In your own words, can you describe your roles?
Maddie:
"I work within South West Water's Engineering department, Amplify, as part of the MCERTS Capital Delivery team. My main responsibility is leading and managing the delivery of the UMON3 programme, which consists of 279 individual projects across the South West. I also support the delivery of the Anti-Foul Programme and a number of other MCERTS-related projects.
My role is all about bringing people together. I work closely with engineering, operations and our contractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and in line with our commitments to the Environment Agency. Day to day, that means tracking progress, managing budgets and resources, solving problems, making decisions under pressure and keeping multiple projects moving forward."
Mark:
"I’m a Project Manager, working collaboratively with key stakeholders across South West Water as well as contractors and designers to deliver projects successfully. Day-to-day, I’m managing multiple projects at different stages, with a strong focus on health and safety, financial performance, regulatory requirements and environmental outcomes. It’s a varied role that involves balancing priorities while keeping delivery on track and aligned to the bigger picture."
What has your career pathway has looked like at South West Water/Pennon Group?
Maddie:
"I joined South West Water on the graduate scheme in 2023, which gave me the opportunity to experience three very different roles across the business. I started in the Storm Overflow Taskforce, before moving into the Wastewater Transformation team, and then completed my final placement in the Concept Team.
After successfully completing the graduate scheme and my final assessments, I applied for a Project Management role within Engineering, as it was the area that had really piqued my interest. I've now been part of the Amplify team for a year, and it's been a fantastic opportunity to continue developing my skills while taking ownership of major programmes."
Mark:
"I joined South West Water in June 2024 after taking a year out to gain experience as a principal contractor. Prior to that, I spent three years working in operations within South West Water, which gave me a strong understanding of how projects are delivered on the ground. Returning to the business allowed me to move into project management, which is where I’m now focused on developing my career. I’m keen to continue progressing, whether that’s towards a programme management role or exploring other areas of the business – one of the things I value most about South West Water is the variety of career paths available if you’re willing to work hard and take opportunities."
What's something people are often surprised to learn about your role?
Maddie:
"Site visits! While a lot of my role involves planning and coordinating projects, I also get the opportunity to visit sites across the South West and see those projects come to life. It's incredibly rewarding to step away from the desk and see the real impact of the work we're delivering. Being able to travel around the region and see first-hand the difference we're making to the environment and local communities is one of the most satisfying parts of the job."
Mark:
"One thing people might not expect is how much of the role is about continuous learning and staying open to new ideas. I’m always looking at innovative and more modern ways of working, whether that’s new approaches to delivery or engineering solutions, and thinking about how we can apply them to improve outcomes. It’s not just about delivering projects as they’ve always been done, but about challenging ourselves to find better, more efficient and more sustainable ways of doing things."
What do you like most about working at South West Water/Pennon Group?
Maddie:
"What I enjoy most is the variety of people, projects and opportunities. My role allows me to work with colleagues from across the wider business and our partners, each bringing different skills and perspectives, so I'm constantly learning something new. No two days are the same, and that variety makes working at South West Water both challenging and incredibly rewarding."
Mark:
"For me, it’s the people. I work with colleagues across the whole business, not just within my own team, and my role gives me the opportunity to build relationships with a wide range of departments. Everyone I’ve worked with has been friendly, supportive and willing to help, which creates a really positive working environment. On top of that, South West Water has strong policies and support in place for both personal development and career progression, which makes it feel like a place you can genuinely build a long-term career."
What three words would you use to describe working here?
Maddie:
Exciting, rewarding, unpredictable
Mark:
Rewarding, supportive, purposeful
