Meet Karina – Assistant Commercial Manager, South West Water 

Before joining South West Water, Karina worked in hospitality management and shares how her experience and skills have easily transferred into her role as Assistant Commercial Manager.  

Karina has shared some great insights into her role, what she values about working at South West Water and what it’s like working in the team.  

What skills from your previous experience have you found to be useful in your role? 

“Once you’ve worked in hospitality, I feel like nothing really scares you because there is no workload or pace you can’t cope with. Hospitality is definitely an industry where you have to deal with a high volume of people in very different circumstances, people have expectations and you have to manage them, adapt to quickly and manage yourself as well.” 

What do you like about working for South West Water? 

“Even though we are a big business, having that autonomy to actually contribute is really important to me. At no point have I made a suggestion or raised an idea that was brushed off – that’s never the case. As an employee I feel that I do have my voice hear within the team and business. 

It’s ambitious and challenging at times, but it is great. I’m proud of the work I do. At the end of the day, I will come back home and I’ll use the same product I’m helping to deliver.” 

How have you been supported in your role? 

“I feel very fortunate to work alongside very experienced people who genuinely care, want to improve, and make a difference. Working in the environment like that motivates you to grow personally and professionally. 

South West Water have given me the opportunity to complete a Chartered Surveyor degree apprenticeship. It has been an absolutely amazing experience so far – I’m having so much fun. It is really nice to go away and build that theoretical knowledge and then come back into the role and see how I can implement it.” 

Tell us about your team 

“It is a very knowledgeable team, with very experienced people who are really keen to help and assist. There is always someone there if you don’t know how to approach something. They’re really funny as well, we do have a laugh, and we have a very good dynamic in the team. The leadership is very open, supportive, and are actually trying to integrate and work together.”
