Engineering and energy

What we do

Working closely together, our Engineering and Energy teams play an integral role in building a better future for the South West. From scoping out new solutions to building brand new facilities, managing our contracts to laying new pipelines – every day brings something different. Keeping our 2200 sites up and running while embracing digitalization and sustainability is no mean feat.

Fortunately, our Engineering and Energy teams love a challenge – and that’s why it’s such an exciting place to work. With huge responsibility comes huge satisfaction, and every member of these departments reaps the rewards of seeing their ideas come to life as they help us accelerate our journey to Net Zero. If you share our values and actively strive to make the world a better place, you’ll fit right in here.

Our teams

Capital Investments and Delivery

From laying new pipelines to investing in our water treatment works, our Capital Investments and Delivery teams work closely with our design partners and contractors to deliver any improvements needed to keep our network up and running long into the future.

Program Development

We look to our Program Development team to manage the investment planning of new engineering projects. From hydraulic sewer modelling to water modelling, they use their technical expertise to scope out new solutions, evaluations and investigations.

Developer Services and Estates

Working alongside infrastructure and construction businesses, our Developer Services team ensures the mains and sewers for new housing and commercial developments are compliant and built correctly. If crossing third-party land, our Estates team will negotiate with the landowner to enable access for our water supply and sewerage services.

Commercials and Contracts

Working with a variety of SMEs and South West Water partners, our Commercials and Contracts team provides NEC contract management support services for one-off, bespoke and framework contracts – all while ensuring commercial governance is assured for investments.

Energy

Forecasting trends and setting South West Water’s carbon strategy, our Energy department plays a huge role in driving our mission to hit Net Zero by 2030. From replacing meters to managing site budgets, undertaking risk management to creating business cases for installing renewables – whichever Energy team you join, you’ll get involved in all sorts of exciting projects here.

Meet the team

Huw
Energy Commercial & Contracts Manager

“The most interesting part of my role is seeing the progression of renewable generation – from concept stage, through to modelling the business cases in Excel and presenting the information for project approval. Seeing solar panels on our sites and knowing I played a role in that is really satisfying. It’s great to know that the work of the Energy department makes a difference in the wider world.”

Ashley
Project Manager

“South West Water is a dynamic, interesting place to work where you can have a direct effect on real world scenarios and problems – environmentally, socially and economically in the local area. The constant moving landscape we have to operate in is challenging and interesting. I’m currently studying my MBA in strategic leadership through the apprenticeship programme at Exeter University which has been really interesting. I also mentor and manage young talent within the business through which is very rewarding.”

Samantha
Assistant Project Manager MEICA

“I joined South West Water because I was inspired by the idea of being able to have an impact on such a precious resource as water. As part of my role, I manage various projects from scoping to final delivery and review. Every project is unique with its own challenges, giving me the opportunity to work with people to improve water industry processes and make a difference for the future. Everyone is really friendly and supportive, and I love being able to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds.”
