What we do

It’s down to our Science teams to protect and enhance the quality of the drinking water that goes into millions of customers’ homes across the South West. Whether they’re out in the countryside taking samples, analysing them in the lab, or investigating quality failures – every member of this team plays a key role in maintaining the water quality our customers expect from South West Water.

Whether you’re looking for an apprenticeship, have just graduated or are already experienced in a similar role – if you’re the curious, collaborative and enthusiastic type, you’ll find plenty of room for progression as part of South West Water’s Science team.

Our teams

Operational Science and Water Quality

It’s down to our Operational Scientists to protect the quality of our drinking water. From taking samples to investigating failures, we look to them to ensure that our water quality always complies with regulations. They also advise our mainline Operations functions, help optimise our processes, and support our long-term water quality strategy for investment.

Labs

It’s down to our Lab teams to analyse both drinking water and wastewater samples – ensuring they’re the quality regulators expect.

Water Regulations

Inspecting plumbing to ensure it complies with regulations, our Water Regulations Officers ensure water isn’t being contaminated or unduly wasted.

Our people

Meet the team

Naz
Apprentice Laboratory Data Scientist

“In Sri Lanka, where I’m from, engineering was male dominated and there weren’t many development programmes focusing on women. When I joined South West Water, I was quite amazed and happy to see the large number of women in managerial positions. I’m proud of my role here because I help people to have clean water and to protect the environment.”

Rona
Water Quality Technician

“As a Water Quality Technician, the best part of my role is that I get to visit lots of scenic places all across North-East and Mid-Devon. When I’m out taking water samples from reservoirs and rivers, I get to see lots of nature – and sometimes I spend time with our customers too. I love that my role is varied and that I’m able to work around my family life.”

Life on the road

Wish you could spend your days driving around the scenic South West? If you love driving, crave variety and want a role that works around you, you’ll love life on the road at South West Water.

Whether you’re meeting colleagues at reservoirs, responding to urgent call-outs or visiting our customers in their homes, every day is guaranteed to bring something different. You’ll enjoy flexibility and responsibility as you complete daily assignments in your designated area – immersing yourself in beautiful locations and wildlife along the way.

Life in the lab

United by their passion for the environment, our customers and the quality of our water supply, our lab teams work hard to ensure our water is always the quality our customers expect. Our lab is a social, friendly place to work where key departments gets together for a weekly huddle – and there’s always an excuse to enjoy some homemade cake together.

Seven-day rolling shifts and event support mean no two weeks are the same in the lab. But you’ll always be supported by your colleagues to ensure every task is completed to the highest quality, whether you’re analysing samples, troubleshooting or reviewing data.
